Smiley Middle School and its AmeriCorps members hosted a Valentine’s Dance on February 8th, 2013. This was not only a time for dancing and fun with friends, but a time for students to enjoy a delicious meal together. Luckily, the local King Soopers and Sam’s Club helped to provide this great meal. With over 80 students in attendance, 7 donated desserts, and over 30 students helping with decorating and setup, this was a great night for the Smiley community.
We are thankful for those who contributed to the success of this dance. Including Glenn Riley, a Smiley alumni, who generously provided strobe lights, lasers, and disco balls. AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) and DPS AmeriCorps members, along with Smiley staff helped serve food, DJ the music, and also danced along with students!
The dance would not have been this great if not for the amazing collaboration of each of these organizations and individuals.
Ms. Nadon, the wonderful gym teacher at Smiley, had her students write essays about the dance. Here are just a few quotes from them:
“It was a fun experience and one of the lasting memories I have made as an 8th grader. The best was that we got FOOD! I consider eating a hobby so I automatically decided to go. The music was good and I had fun dancing up an appetite.” -Giselle Solis, 8th grade
“The dance was great. It was fun. It had loud music, food and good drinks. It was very organized and it had some cool lights. Thanks for the people who ever made the dance for us. I had a lot of fun.” -Mannie Varela, 8th grade
“My experience at the dance was pretty good. I liked the music. Me and my friends had a lot of fun. I didn’t eat but hear that the food was great!” -Uriah Martinez, 8th grade
“The Valentine’s dance was great. The food was delicious.” -Moses Birch, 8th Grade
