Name: Jessica Brandhorst
Hometown: Glidden, Iowa
Primary School Site: Fairview Elementary
I am a graduate of the University of Iowa (Go Hawks!), where my husband and I met and decided to start our adventure together in Denver with AmeriCorps. This is my second year as an AmeriCorps member with the Urban Education Service Corps, and I couldn’t be enjoying it more!

Who is your favorite cartoon character and why? Arthur Read from the PBS show Arthur—my brother and I would watch Arthur every morning before elementary school.

What is the most interesting place you’ve been and how did you end up there? A temple in Kanchipuram, India—I spent a winter break studying abroad in southern India, and it was an experience I’ll never forget!

What made you interested in serving for AmeriCorps? Service has always been important to me, but most of my previous endeavors were short term projects. I absolutely loved the idea of dedicating an entire year to service, and having the opportunity to make a lasting impact on a community with a group of people who share the same passion as me. As a second year AmeriCorps member, I look forward to expanding upon last year’s accomplishments and making them more sustainable, as well as growing my professional skill set.

What is your biggest pet peeve? Run-on sentences.

What book are you reading right now? The Complete Collection of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1.

Favorite movie? Childhood movie—Beauty and the Beast; a more recent movie—I Love You, Man.

Name: Trevon Brandhorst
Hometown: Waterloo, IA
Primary School Site: Fairview Elementary
I graduated from the University of Iowa (Go Hawks!), where I received a degree in History, as well as a minor in French. I also recently married my beautiful wife Jessica Brandhorst, who is the other Program Assistant for the Urban Education Corps within the office of Family and Community Engagement in Denver Public Schools. We have two dogs; Barkley and Pippen who are both named after Former NBA stars Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen. I am training for my first half-marathon and I have made it a personal goal to build healthier habits this year. I am from Iowa and I play for team DPS!

Favorite cartoon character and why? My favorite cartoon character is Bugs Bunny. I took a history course in college about how cartoons were used as propaganda during World War I and World War II. It’s interesting how a cartoon character created for young children helped unify the citizens of the United States.

What are the most played song on your iPod playlist? The most played song on my iPod is Under the Bridge by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

What made you interested in serving for AmeriCorps? In high school I discovered I have a passion for service when I opted into a Senior Leadership class. I pursued service further when I began my freshmen year at the University of Iowa by joining a Service and Leadership dormitory floor. It only made sense after graduating from college that I would look for my next opportunity through service. After exploring the options AmeriCorps offered exactly what I was looking for which was a chance to serve, develop professionally, and explore the field of education.

What is your biggest pet peeve? My biggest pet peeve is being late. If my schedule allows, I am always aiming to get to my next destination early. If I am late, I always feel like everyone is staring at me when I walk in to my destination. Being early allows me to tackle any issues proactively and usually ensures that I am fully prepared for task at hand.

What book are you reading right now? Winter’s Heart by Robert Jordan

Favorite quote? “There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.” – Kenneth Blanchard

Name: Katie Broz
Hometown: Chicago, IL
Primary School Site: West Career Academy
Katie was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Due to her love of working and interacting with people, she studied Psychology and Social Welfare at the beautiful and cold campus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Go Badgers!). She quickly developed a strong passion for social justice and advocacy. After taking an Education Policy class, she found herself compelled to become a part of the movement to distinguish the education opportunity gap that unfairly works against students of low socioeconomic status. She found the Family and Community Engagement Urban Education AmeriCorps team after researching nonprofit organizations with this mission and decided to pack her bags and move to Denver, Colorado. Katie is so proud to be a member of the amazing WCA family and staff. Seeing the students grow and progress through all of their struggles and adversity is not only a rewarding experience but is also truly inspiring. In her free time, you will find Katie hiking, skiing, seeing live music, cooking, reading, and travelling as much as she possibly can. She also loves to tutor and volunteer with elementary students at the Cope Branch of the Boys and Girls Club just around the corner of West Career Academy.

What do you see as the biggest challenge to overcome in public education today? Unfortunately, there are many issues that our public education system is facing. I would say one of the most crucial issues is the lack of power that teachers have in deciding their curriculum. Teachers should have more say in what they are teaching and on what and how their students are being tested.

We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You’re playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the spirit that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

What do you see as the biggest challenge to overcome in public education today? I see equity as of the biggest barriers to student success. We know that education can be one of the best equalizers in our society, but yet the achievement gap between students of different backgrounds is still shocking. All our students deserve the best, and deserve to know that they have the right to a high-class education.
